Health or when required for your own protection:

• Malaria is common in this country so every precaution needs to be taken in order to avoid infection.

• A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age coming from countries with infected areas. Other travellers are strongly advised to obtain vaccination against the disease before visiting the country.

• Medical facilities are likely to be limited, particularly outside Kampala. Complete medical and travel insurance should be obtained prior to entry and an emergency airlift to a nearby country may be required in the event of a serious accident or illness.

• All travellers should seek medical advice before travelling to the country and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up to date.

Security or when required by the customs:

• Uganda is owing to the high risk of terrorism and general acts of violence, attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Large crowds of people and public places may also be targets. Travellers to Uganda should note the continued state of tensions and potential for armed conflict and check the current state of political tensions before travelling to the country.

• Visitors should against all travel to Karamoja (Kotido, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Katakwi Kaabong, Abim, Kapchorwa and Bukwa Districts) in the north east. Lawlessness there is endemic (eg road ambushes). Tribal clashes are frequent and unpredictable. Small arms are widespread and deaths or injury from gunshot wounds occur regularly.
